Night Shift ((Zero))

[Yuuki Cross]

So far the night had been calm, it was almost a rarity to go so long without something happening. While keeping watch from one of the school’s many balconies it was easy to see almost the whole campus at once. This time around Yuuki saw nothing but usually, more often then not, the trouble was just a Day Class student or two trying to snap a photo of the Night Class. Or worse yet, trying sneak their way into the classrooms. For the most part it seemed that Kaname had the Night Class trained to behave, but that never guarenteed anything. The anticipation made it almost impossible to enjoy the clear night sky. It seemed like every star was visible, and to top it all off the moon was most impressive as well.

Finally settling on the idea that tonight was going to be one of smooth sailing Yuuki pulled her hand away from where she kept Artemis and decided to take a more relaxed demeanor for now. There was no sense in being hypertensive when the most movement she could catch was that of a tree branch waving in the occasional breath of wind that passed along the campus. Turning her gaze to the sky, Yuuki glanced to Zero out of the corner of her eye, then back up once more. “Seems like it's going to be a calm night." A faint smile came to her facial features. “Unless of course you've picked up on something?" It was unlikely that he had caught something and not re-acted, but it;s really all she could think to say at he moment. She really didn't want to upset him by coming across as intrusive, so any personal questions would have to wait until after she could gauge his mood. I sure would love to know what he's thinking about...

[Zero Kiryuu]

The night seemed to be rather cool and the wind would brush softly against those who were outside. It was a night that normally would have many day class students sneaking out, or even some of the Night Class showing up. It didn’t appear that anything too strange was going on, but Zero figured that he would wait a while and observe everything that was going on around him. It was better to watch your surroundings before reacting too soon.

Zero remembered his training when he was young. Those were the good days, the days that were full of his youthful innocence. He remembered being told many things by his mentor who often watched over him and his twin brother. One of those things was to always keep an eye on the things that went on around you. If you could observe everything at once, then you could instantly pick out any flaws or differences. In this case, it was if there was someone misbehaving and not obeying the school rules. It didn’t matter what class they were from to him. What seemed to matter the most was that he was keeping everyone safe.

He disliked the Night Class more than anything, so he was prepared to use his weapon to harm them if they so much as tried to touch a Day Class student. They were beasts in human form. That was all that they were to him; nothing more and nothing less. He despised vampires for what they had done to him. He could never get over how they destroyed his family and simply shattered the existence that he had once known. His life would never be the same no matter how hard he tried. There simply was no turning back.

He hated himself for the fate he had no choice but to accept. However, he found himself denying and fighting that change constantly. He couldn’t let himself crumble. He couldn’t let Yuuki see him become a monster. It was because of this fear that he hid the truth from her and requested that the headmaster keep this secret from her. He feared that he would lose Yuuki if she were to find out that he was slowly becoming a monster that fed off of humans and blood.

He let out a soft yawn as he felt his thoughts spinning in his mind. He didn’t want to be up so late, but it was his duty to keep the students of the school safe and to most of all keep chaos from happening. He let his fingertips graze across the Bloody Rose as to he wanted to assure its position in case trouble were to occur. At this school, you could never be too sure that the night was going to be peaceful.

He snapped from his thoughts and glanced over at Yuuki when he heard her speak. She always seemed to be so calm and cheerful to him. It honestly was a breath of fresh air at times, but he didn’t want to reveal that to her. It would be too embarrassing! He also enjoyed her kindness, but he also disliked how she was too kind to everyone. That seemed to be her fatal flaw; or so Zero seemed to think! “You can never be too sure, Yuuki.” His tone was very serious and stern. He wanted to get her to think of all the possibilities of what could happen if they slacked off with thoughts that nothing was going to happen. If they believed that way, they would let their guard down and students could get by them easier.

He shook his head to her second comment. He kept his expression composed and stared at her. He didn’t want to let her in on his thoughts too much, but he didn’t want to push her away either. “While nothing may be going on at this moment, I don’t think we should let our guard down, alright?” He let out a soft sigh as he wondered if he sounded a bit too harsh. It wasn’t always his intention to sound so mean and pessimistic. More or less he just wanted to sound realistic.

Upset with himself he began to walk off on his own rather quickly. He figured that he would probably hurt the girl more by being around her. He didn’t want to do more harm than good; especially when it came to Yuuki. He wanted to protect her more than anything. He knew that one day he’d have to protect her from himself. He managed to walk a far enough distance away from her to let a pained expression cross his face. He didn’t want to attack Yuuki. Being around her was too tempting and it seemed to be harder at times to keep full control of himself.

He let his fingers reach into his pocket to touch the blood tablets that he had been given a while ago. He hated to take them more than anything. To be honest, he held himself off from them till he almost couldn’t control himself because he kept trying to fight the fate he was doomed to have. He prepared himself, however, to compose himself if he heard Yuuki’s footsteps if she decided to follow after him. He bit his lower lip gently as he found himself taking a seat on a bench that was nearby and he buried his face into his hands. He wanted to do something about this painful feeling, but he knew that he couldn’t do too much with Yuuki around, so he fought against himself to push away how he was feeling. So far, he seemed to be doing a good job.

Unable to look up to see if Yuuki was nearby, he breathed out some words calmly so that she could hear if she was there. “Yuuki, you should go patrol some more… Don’t worry about me.” He figured that she would worry about him if she were to see him like he was at this moment. It was unavoidable. He just needed to get a brief moment to take one of the tablets to keep him calm temporarily. He waited to hear the comforting sound of her voice before he could bring himself to attempt to look up.

[Yuuki Cross]

It wasn't a shock of any kind for Yuuki when Zero took the stern road on the matter. For a while now, though it seemed to be getting more and more obvious, it seemed like something was really eating at him. Yet no matter how much Yuuki thought about asking him she never did, she always allowed this little voice in the back of her head to talk her down from doing what she knew to be the right thing. It seemed so simple, but she knew very well why she never asked. She was afraid to push him away even more. At the moment communication was strained, but there was still a thread left to hold them together. After that Yuuki couldn't be sure there was anything left.

Turning to look at a stay owl flying overhead, the young brunette wasn't sure what else she should say. She almost wished she could take back her comment if it would make anything easier on the situation. It was hard for her to swallow the idea that she might be a nuisance to Zero, but it was out of her hands. On a lighter note, she had figured that as long as she didn't say anything else, the night might be salvageable. She never thought Zero was going to have something else to say. Turning completely to face him she was taken totally off guard by his new demeanor. It wasn't so much that he sounded happier, it was that he had worded his follow up in a way that, to her , sounded kinder and left her a chance to answer.

But before getting the chance to return her thought with an “Okay", Zero started to walk away. A chill ran through her in that moment. It was happening, he was drifting away, this time literally. No...that's not it...he's just going to do his job, our job....splitting up covers more ground... She told herself everything was okay, but she didn't believe it. I should follow him... But her feet stayed rooted. Watching Zero dissappear into the distance, that final “Okay” that she wanted to give was welling up in her throat, making it hard to breath. Or was that the fact that she felt like she could cry. No, I'm not letting him get away from me. We're friends and if I was any kind of a good one I would start asking about how he is. With her new found determination she hit the ground running, surprised to find that Zero hadn't gone too far. Her joy showed through a smile, one that she was careful to pocket away when she got within sight. There was every intention of playfully tackling him off the bench to lighten the mood, but she slowed upon hearing his request. “So then, you do know I'm worried." She slowed to a stop just short of the end of the bench. “Zero, I don't want to seem nosey but what's the matter? You seem so much more distracted lately. You know you can talk to me." Coming around the front of the bench, Yuuki helped herself to a seat, careful not to sit too close on the off chance he really didn't want company. “I can't help if I don't know what the problem is." Her brown eyes finally rested on him. She wasn't going to give up this time.

[Zero Kiryuu]

Zero found himself trying to regain control of himself. In a situation like this, it was something that he was struggling with. He was scared of someone finding out about him slowly becoming a vampire; especially Yuuki. He cared about her too much to have her find that out to only treat him differently. Secretly, Zero didn’t want to have things change between them too much. Maybe it was the fact that he felt so much comfort when he was around Yuuki. He was so used to being around her from the past few years that he seemed that he couldn’t bear the thought of losing her kindness…No. He couldn’t stand the thought of losing her.

He could never truly tell her how he felt about her. He knew that deep down that she would probably reject him. After all, he knew that she loved Kaname too much. She did too much for him in Zero’s opinion. He didn’t trust Kaname, nor did he believe that he deserved Yuuki’s kindness. He was a pureblood vampire, and Zero feared more than anything was that he would get the idea to one day change Yuuki and that would simply change everything in his world once more. He couldn’t bear the thought of her becoming a monster, so he wanted to protect her humanity.

He bit into his lip as he struggled to gain his control back. As soon as some of his blood spilled from his lips, he licked it up as quickly as he could so that no one could see it and question him on it. It was also to feed the hunger that he was fighting against; although it didn’t seem to help him much anyways no matter how hard he tried to. He exhaled a bit heavily now as he listened for Yuuki’s footsteps as he felt her presence drawing nearer. He felt fear grip his heart as he tried to think of different ways to get out of the situation he was in. He cared too much about Yuuki to let her know about what was going on and what was happening to him. It was a burden, secret, and sin that he had decided to keep to himself and live with on his own. It was better if he left her to be in the dark and naïve.

He kept his face in his hands as he kept his thoughts turning for the perfect answers to Yuuki’s questions and comments that were sure to come. He was acting strangely and not like his normal self now. If it didn’t bring any suspicion he’d be very shocked. Of course, Yuuki wasn’t stupid and was always very curious about things; even though he figured she didn’t always ask. He wondered if she thought that she’d be a burden to him if she were to be more open about her thoughts to him. If she ever were to ask him that he would instantly tell her to speak her mind. He knew that would sound completely hypocritical, but he didn’t want her to hide things from him.

When she had gotten close enough and had replied to his comment, he inhaled briefly, and then he found himself exhaling for a long moment before replying. “Of course I know. If I didn’t know how you act and think by now I don’t think I’d deserve to even know you.” He found himself leaning back completely against the bench now and he rested his head lightly on the back of it. He let his left arm cover his eyes because he was scared that they would appear frightening because of how he seemed to be feeling right now. He needed to keep himself in check. “You’re also pretty easy to read I hope you know.” Of course, Zero was only teasing her. She seemed to be very adorable to him when she got so upset over small comments that he made. He was sure that she always knew that he was joking. If one were to watch them when they acted like this, one could swear that they acted like an older brother and sister. After all, they did grow up together!

Deep down though, Zero wondered if there could have been something more if Kaname wasn’t there. It was always times like this that he would secretly think that. However, he always found himself pushing that thought away because he knew deep in his heart that he stood no chance against Kaname because of how he had saved Yuuki. She never stopped talking or worrying about Kaname; even as a child. He hated that more than anything, but he could never bring himself to say a thing. It just wasn’t his place.

He frowned slightly at her next question and he felt his heart jump a bit when she asked him if something was wrong. Of course there was! He just wasn’t going to say anything. “No. There’s nothing wrong, Yuuki…” He felt his voice trail off as he felt her draw nearer and his heart seemed to flutter a little faster now. She was always like this. She was so demanding to help him even if she had no clue about his problems or what was even on his mind. He could never understand why she was so optimistic at times like this towards everyone that she seemed to know.

He felt himself gain a little more control of himself and he let his arm move off of his eyes as he sat up to stare at Yuuki. His gaze was frozen over and cold. “Yuuki… You need to start worrying about yourself more and other people less.” He kept his gaze intent on her. “If you become too focused on other people and their problems you may lose yourself. Above all else, you don’t want that to happen.” He paused in thought and tried to keep himself from blushing at his next comment. “Besides, I like the Yuuki that’s here in the present with me… And I don’t want to lose that girl ever; not to anyone or anything. That’s why I want you to take better care of yourself.” He kept a straight face while speaking and his silver orbs couldn’t find themselves leaving Yuuki’s expression. He knew that no matter what he could say to her that he’d always be viewed in a sibling light. Nothing more and nothing less.

[Yuuki Cross]

Never in her whole life could she have seen this coming. Suddenly she was lost in the sense that everything that was happening in this moment was a dream. She didn't want to believe it but with everything that was going on, it was hard to convince herself that she was awake. Her words were caught in her throat, there was so much she wanted to say about everything he had just said. Something had to be wrong, for him to want to open up so much. But if this is a dream does that make it some kind of bad omen? Is he sick? Or am I sick? Why would I be making all of this up in my head? In that moment more of her ideals came together. It all made sense, why she wanted him to open up to her, why she didn't want him to walk away. It had little do actually do with her ideas of family and him being like a brother. Somewhere along the way she had let him in as more then just some adopted family member. Oh great...here we go again. For once, can't I just like someone that I actually stand a chance with? I'm like a little sister to him...what kind of messed up mind misconstrues that? Aside from mine.

Having allowed her gaze to wander, Yuuki brought her attention back to Zero. She was still unsure of what to say, but leaving him to sit in silence after he had just allowed her to hear so much insight on his feelings was not a particularly bright idea in her mind. “Hey now, my sense of direction isn't always the best, but I promise you I won't loose myself. This Yuuki isn't going anywhere." Jutting a thumb in her direction she made is seem more like a deceleration then anything. It was a tactic to try and lighten the heavy mood just a little, before giving him a more serious answer on the other matter. “And I know it seems like I might spread myself a little thin sometimes trying to help others, but it really is part of who I am. If it makes you feel any better though, I will work on taking better care of myself okay?" At this she scooted closer to Zero hoping that there was still a chance to poke around a little more while she had him in a position that he was willing to be open with her. “Zero, are you really sure there's nothing wrong? I mean I know that you said no...but I'm not sure if I believe you." She didn't want to sound like she was accusing him of lying, she just wanted to make it clear that she was no dummy and just like he could tell with her, sometimes she could just tell with him.
