Cross Academy at night was so different from that of the Cross Academy she knew by day. The sense of pristine nature hung thick in the air, when the sun went down the campus became much more like a gathering of brilliant minds whom simply showed up for fun as opposed to actually learn. Perhaps that’s all this was, only in reality it was much less for fun and more for a favor to Kaname and Headmaster Cross. A favor brought on by the idea that one day vampires and humans could co-exist. It's why Yuuki was wandering the halls at the moment instead of the grounds. There was a new Night Class student and Headmaster wanted extra measures to be taken to ensure her welcome. Naturally Zero spiraled into a fit of rage over the idea of having to perform such a deed, so here she was.

Every so often the teen girl would pass an open door, one that allowed her to catch a glimpse of what the illustrious Night Class was up to. It looked no different then the Day Class, setup wise, but their lessons were not anything she could make heads or tales of. A lot of her misunderstanding she could easily contribute to the fact that she didn't stick around long, but what she did pick up was almost like Greek to her. Just another reason I have to forget about Kaname-Sempai, we're just too different. Heaving a sigh, Yuuki was once more on her self-pity mantra, one that she was quick to toss aside when she finally saw another being crossing the halls. Is that the new student? With only one way to find out, Yuuki adjusted her Guardian arm band and put on the most pleasant face she could before approaching. “Excuse me, you wouldn't happen to be Saya Yukimura would you? If so I'm Yuuki Cross, I'm here to show you around." It was awfully presumptuous of her and she knew this, but on the other hand not many other night students would be out wandering aimlessly knowing that she and Zero were around to find them were they to try anything funny.

Cross Academy was different than she had expected. She hadn't anticipated what the overall goal of this place was and it had taken her by surprise. Teaching vampires to coexist with humans peacefully was a close to impossible task. Not only that, but the atmosphere of this place was heavy with tension as if someone was expected to make a mistake. She gripped the book in her arms tightly. Nervous? Who her? Well maybe just a little. She had been lost in her thoughts when the voice of a young girl caught her attention.

“Excuse me, you wouldn't happen to be Saya Yukimura would you? If so I'm Yuuki Cross, I'm here to show you around."

The young raven haired student looked at the brunette before her. The air of superiority that this 'Yuuki' spoke with annoyed her just a bit. Something told Saya that this little human would be rather amusing to toy with but like all humans, she needed to be led down a path of falsified friendship. She took a step forward, towards Yuuki, and smiled rather politely.

"As a matter of fact, I am. I appreciate the offer but are you certain that you should go out of your way to do such a thing? After all, aren't you supposed to be keeping an eye on the entire Night Class and not just one student? It would be a shame if something were to happen on your watch and you weren't there to stop it."

Her tone was informative but yet held that little hint of arrogance that some of the Night Class tended to have and at the same time there was something almost knowledgeable about her words. As she spoke, the polite little smile remained in place as if it had been practiced and perfected. Especially since the best way to hide something was behind an innocent smile.

Drawing back on her pleasant approach just a bit, it was evident that this young lady had no interest in her “goody goody’ tactic. Truth be told Yuuki never had to try to be nice, most of the time it just came naturally, but this girl seemed to have developed a dislike of the whole idea. Placing one hand closer to her left thigh, where she kept Artemis, Yuuki was unsure if the comment made about something happening was an observation, or a threat. Either way she wanted to be prepared. “Well as it happens I’m not the only Guardian on duty. My partner, Zero, is watching the grounds at the moment.” I sure hope he’s okay… Trying to keep a calm demeanor, Yuuki reinforced her previous smile with another round of kind sounding intentions, hoping to warrant a better reaction this time around. “So Saya, do you have any questions about Cross Academy that maybe I can help answer?” Stepping a little closer, Yuuki wanted to close the gap between them, maybe make this experience seem a little less informal. In Saya’s defense this was a new school, and Yuuki was a complete stranger to her, so with that thought in mind it was easier to just let the first encounter become water under the bridge.

A faint smirk of triumph touched Saya's lips as Yuuki reached for Artemis. It wasn't exactly the reaction most would have had under these circumstances but it was still amusing enough for Saya to know just what to say. "You should relax, Ms. Cross. Fear doesn't suit you very well and you have no need to be cautious of me. I have no intentions of doing anything to stain my reputation." Her words were calm but held that hint of an inside joke. At the mention of another Guardian, Saya's smirk faltered slightly. It was good the school had protection but were two Day students enough? It seemed like a foolish idea but it was the Headmaster's plan so she didn't argue with it but it did leave her with a single question.

"Actually I do have a question for you. Why are there only two people in charge of keeping the Night Class under control? Wouldn't you think it would have been safer with a couple others. And more importantly, why is it the two of you and not two others?" Her words held a bitterness to them that was only barely covered by a slight curiosity. It hadn't been her intention that Yuuki answered the questions. If anything, She was more focused on seeing how well this little Day Class student could handle herself. It was something she had always done to people she just met. If they could withstand her verbal assault then it would give them some respect in her eyes.

It was nothing personal between the two of them. It was just caution on Saya's part. She'd rather have people hate her and avoid her, then have them close and caring. It did get lonely at times but after everything, it was the only way. Such a shame too. Nice people were usually the easiest to scare off but some of the best people to keep close. Other than that, they were just a liability. Especially if that person was a human. As Yuuki took a step forward, Saya took a step back without realizing it. It wasn't fear. How could she be afraid of a human? No, it wasn't that. It was more of a shock to Saya that Yuuki hadn't run off because of her verbal abuse.

Self disappointment stuck Yuuki when the young Vampire pointed out that fear didn't suit her. It was nothing about the comment itself that had offended her, it was just the idea that she had been careless of her actions and allowed her company to see very clearly what her intentions were. She's just a student here, so there really isn't a need to worry... Keeping up with her smile, the young Day Class student was trying her best not to seemed ruffled by the blow that had been dealt. Instead she focused all of her attention on answering the next round of questions. It seemed odd that anyone would ask why there were not more night watchers, it was really the first time she had been presented with the idea of that being strange. “Well truth be told we’re more here to watch for troublesome Day Class students. The Night Class is kept under control by President Kaname."

Before the mention of Kaname's name Yuuki almost took an unnecessary pause. It was slightly painful to have to verbalize his name. She knew full well that driving a wedge between them now would be better in the long run, but it still hurt her emotionally, to the point that talking about him was a chore. “As for why it's us two, well I don't see why you can't know since everyone else does. Zero and I are the adopted children of Headmaster Cross. I guess you could say we do this as a personal favor." At that her simple smile turned into a brimming one. She was happy to receive a way out of the previous topic. In fact Yuuki had spent almost so much of her attention being grateful that she almost missed Saya stepping back when she closed in. Okay...that was just a bit strange. I wonder why she doesn't want me close to her. Many ideas ran through her head, one being that maybe smelling a human was too much for Saya to handle. Another was that she was hiding something on her person that she didn't want to be discovered. What ever the reason Yuuki filed the thought away for later. Right now she had a job to do, and the night wasn't getting any younger. “I'm thinking it might be a good idea to walk and talk so I can give you a general idea of the school's layout." Without further hesitation, Yuuki took the lead, only glancing back for a second to see if Saya was following. Though things seemed rocky, Yuuki didn't get the vibe that Saya was a bad person. Given she was an aristocrat vampire, so far things seemed pretty normal. Well as normal as dealing with a vampire could be anyway.

She remained silent as Yuuki answered her questions. Her slight hesitation on Kaname's name caught Saya's attention rather quickly but instead of addressing it now, she saved it for a later question. It wouldn't have been too nice to visit a subject that the young Yuuki so obviously didn't want to be reminded about. Saya could almost see the wheels turning in Yuuki's mind as she thought. The combination of the beaming grin and the thoughts running through Yuuki's mind almost tempted Saya to just walk up to her and smack her back into reality. She pushed the temptation away as Yuuki spoke again. Knowing the words were true, she followed Yuuki but made sure to keep a little distance between them.

It wouldn't be good if either of their secrets were revealed, now would it? But then again, a single question came to mind that had been bugging her since Yuuki's hesitation. As that question came to mind, Saya's formerly smug grin fell to a thoughtful and serious expression. "Mind explaining something to me?" She asked, breaking the tension of the silence and keeping her gaze on the floor as she walked. "Why did you hesitate back there? What is he to you?" By 'he', she meant Kaname, that much was obvious. But the question itself, though personal, held a single inquiring note of true curiosity rather than the snide cockiness of her former questions.

Questions weren't the only thing that gave answers and it wasn't the only thing Saya looked to for answers. It wasn't exactly the response but its presentation that was what she noticed more. People always subconsciously tell you the truth even if they don't realize it. It was mere child's play to read someone like Yuuki, who was so expressive. All of Yuuki's answers and actions had left the young vampire with more questions than answers but most of them were best saved for a different time.

So she noticed then...I should have guessed... Having only known Saya for a brief amount of time Yuuki had already gathered serval things, one being that she had the canny ability to read between the lines. Now was not the time time to share her whole history with Kaname, well for several reasons. One being Saya was only a new student, a complete stranger. And two this tour was supposed to be about getting to know the school. Turning to look at Saya, all the while walking backwards at a slowed pace, Yuuki just smiled softly, not wanting to lie, but also not willing to tell the whole truth. “Well he's very important to the Cross family given that without him this academy would not be able to offer a Night class consisting of vampires." Reaching a hand out to the wall so she could run her hand along it, Yuuki pondered how much else she should fill her in on. “Also he was of some assistance to me when I was very young, but that was a long time ago." Stopping once more, Yuuki pulled her hand from the wall and curled it into a loose fist at her side.

Looking to the ground, then back up, it was obvious to Yuuki in that moment that she had missed some of the classes, but she had sort of gathered by now that Saya was less interested in the school then Yuuki would have liked. If there was even just a little interest none of this other side topic would be going on. “So if you look here, we have lecture halls. You will be assigned a list of your classes soon if you havn't been already.” Spinning around again, Yuuki started to walk again, hoping the interrogation was over. “Oh hey I just had a thought, do you like horses? We have a stable out back, I could take you to see it if you like?" Maybe if I can get to know her better this will be easier on the both of us.

Answers that only led to more questions. That was all Yuuki was giving her. On any normal occasion, Saya wouldn't have hesitated to pick at the answers some more until she knew the full truth but her "guide" seemed a little too tense. It was interesting how much she actually learned from watching then listening to Yuuki's answers. After all, words were only a single facet of the truth. Yuuki was also quick to change the subject. A good move even if foolish. This time Yuuki won. Saya would let go of all the things she could possibly say. For now, of course.

She let Yuuki continue without interruption and even decided to let Yuuki know, in her own way, that she'd let her win this time. Her gaze followed where it was guided, taking in the sight of the lecture hall from the open door beside them. It hadn't been exactly what she'd expected but it was impressive nonetheless. At the mention of getting a class list, Saya slid a piece of paper out of the notebook she carried and waved it like she was fanning herself with it. "You mean this? Headmaster Cross was kind enough to give it to me when I arrived." Her words held such disguised sarcasm that it was barely noticeable, unless one knew how she acted.

“Oh hey I just had a thought, do you like horses? We have a stable out back, I could take you to see it if you like?"

She paused in her playful mocking and was forced to recompose herself. As she did so, her eyes held the same faint glimmer of wistfulness that Yuuki's had held when talking about Kaname. The emotion died from her eyes as quickly as it had appeared, being buried beneath the calm, collect, and slightly cold mask that Yuuki was probably going to be very familiar with by the end of this tour. "They're okay...I guess..." She let her gaze drift away from Yuuki's, not really wanting to meet her eyes but at the same time knowing that it wasn't a matter of "not wanting to" but a matter of "just can't".

For the first time in forever, someone had actually been able to direct a question at her concerning her likes and dislikes. It had completely shocked her and caught her off guard but unfortunately there was too much risk in letting little Yuuki know that. The first thing that came to mind, was to cut off Yuuko's attempts at trying to see behind the mask before she got to know anything. It was safer that way. "Why do you want to know, Cross? My likes and dislikes should be none of your concern." Her tone was colder than ice, but something about it seemed forced. If Yuuki was truly paying attention, maybe she would see right through her attempt at keeping distance between them. Just the thought of that possibility worried her. What if she did see through the acting? How much would she learn? Those were only some of the questions running through the mind of young Saya as she stopped walking and continued to try playing Yuuki like a fool.

And just like that, any progress she thought she had been making was suddenly gone. It was strange but Yuuki was getting this guarded vibe from Saya. It was similar to the one that Zero put up around her almost all of the time. Something must be conflicting her… Suddenly it felt less like it was Yuuki’s fault that this meet and greet was going askew, and more like it had something to do with an event or person outside of this moment. A wave of understanding crashed over Yuuki and her disposition changed completely. “You’re right, as a member of the disciplinary comity I probably shouldn’t want to get to know a member of the night class personally…” In that moment she reached up to her arm band and pulled it down, effectively removing it so that she could stuff it in the pocket of her skirt.

[/b]“But what if I were just another day student? Would you maybe want to head over to the stables and see the horses now?”[/b] It was a long shot, but she was willing to take the chance. There was no way she could make everyone like her, but there was no harm in trying to change how Saya viewed her.

It seemed she had underestimated Yuuki, seeing as how once again Yuuki was able to surprise her. It wasn't everyday when someone with status was willing to meet another as an equal. Her face fell to a faint frown. Something just wasn't right with this girl. It was as if Yuuki had no common sense whatsoever. As thoughts were racing through her mind, Yuuki spoke again, bringing the vampire out of her thoughts. Her response was a simple half shrug, "If that's where you want to take me. You're the guide after all." She wasn't exactly sure what Yuuki was playing at but there was something wrong with this whole situation.

She let her gaze drop to the floor, focusing intently on every little line. It was something to distract her as she tried to sort her thoughts. She took a few steps so that she was next to Yuuki. "Why don't you tell me about some of the other new students while we walk?" Her voice was quiet, a little louder than a whisper but fainter than her usual tone. The words themselves, were a simple question meant to gather some information. Maybe Yuuki would reply and maybe she wouldn't but until then, the vampire continued walking down the hall. If Yuuki was going to lead her anywhere, then she'd better hurry up and take her place.
